Your First Pair of Ballet Slippers Shopping Guide

Getting Started

If you are jsut starting ballet, please know it is absolutely fine to start without ballet slippers and simply wear a pair of socks. In fact, many professional dancers take the barre just wearing socks, because it allows them to feel the floor and work thoroughly through the toes without the restriction of the shoe. This definitely works! So don’t let not having shoes stop you.  Once you start moving and turning, you do need ballet shoes.

Choosing the Right Ballet Slippers: Full Sole vs. Split Sole, Leather vs. Canvas

When selecting ballet slippers, you’ll come across a few key differences. Here’s a guide to help you decide:

Full Sole vs. Split Sole

  • Full Sole: Ideal for beginners as they provide more support for the arches and help build foot strength.

  • Split Sole: Designed for flexibility, split-sole shoes allow for greater articulation of the feet and are popular among more experienced dancers who want a sleeker look.

Leather vs. Canvas

  • Leather: Durable and long-lasting, leather slippers mold to your feet over time.

  • Canvas: Come at a lower price point. Less durable and not as adaptable  to your foot as the canvas does not stretch.

Color Choices

  • Ballet slippers traditionally come in black, pink, or white. The color is a personal choice!
