Palos Flamencos: Alegrias de Cadiz
As its name suggests, alegrías (joys) is one of the most festive styles or palos flamencos. Originating in the province of Cádiz in Andalusia, alegrías bring a vibrant and joyful energy.
Alegrias Rhythm and Character
The compas (rhythm) of Alegrias is shared with sa number of other palos and is based on a 12-beat compas (rhythm). However, alegrías are faster, which gives them the festive touch that characterizes them.
As a general theme, the alegrias often speak about the beautiful province of Cádiz or have a love theme, but on the cheerful, admiring side. They possess a joyful character, which should be interpreted by the dancer.
The “baile por alegrías” (alegrias dance) is sassy, brilliant, showy, and fun! This style often showcases flashy skills, such as fast footwork, gracious poses, coquettish looks, and more. It is also danced with a bata de cola and shawl, and dancers usually wear cheerful colors.
Flamenco dance styles are not gender-based, although it is more common, especially in dance schools and outside of Spain, to have a majority of female dancers.
Compas de Alegrias (Alegrias Rhtyhm)
The rhythm of alegrías is based on a 12-beat rhythm. The singing is composed of coplas made up of four octosyllabic verses, sometimes complemented with a coletilla or estribillo of three or four verses.
Structure of the “Baile por Alegrias”
The traditional structure of alegrías for dance is as follows and can be seen in the video of the alegrías performed by Macarena Olivares:
- Cante Por Alegrias: The main song.
- Silencio and Castellana: A slow part (similar to an adagio or break) with a pickup (Castellana).
- Escobilla: The footwork section.
- Bulerias de Cadiz: The upbeat ending.
Costuming
As you can see, dancers often wear a mantón (shawl) and bata de cola (long trail dress) when performing “por alegrías.” Bright colors or costumes of an upbeat character are typical of this style, reflecting its joyful nature.
